I’ve been obsessed with Big Love, an HBO television show. It’s about a polygamist family! …in Utah. hah.

Anyway, I’ve been really wondering as I’m watching this…why is polygamy illegal? Back when we were all still developing as the human race polygamy was a very widespread practice. Men would go off and fight in battles or die hunting and women and children needed someone to provide for them. This lead to a very unequal balance of the sexes and the obvious solution was to have more than one women to every man. Everyone’s happy! Today that’s really not necessary, and obviously it’s not socially accepted…but why?

This is technically the land of religious freedom. People are free to have affairs in a marriage without any legal ramifications.. unless you have a prenuptial agreement that covers that…then you’re screwed. But married couples can practice swinging and really do whatever they like as long as it’s not harming anyone, they just can’t get married again while currently married.

As far as the practice goes, I think that as long as the people involved are consenting adults I don’t see a problem. I don’t like 12 year olds should be married off before they really know what they’re getting into. Consenting adults, yes. Impressionable minors, no.

After the raids that happened last year, the Polygamist community really had a spotlight shone on it. It turned into a huge he said/she said mess and we still really don’t know what all happened, we just saw wives and mothers crying over their children who got taken away.

Again, I think that as far as the religious aspect goes, God doesn’t say you need to marry a minor, the religion just believes you need more than one wife so everyone gets to the other side of the pearly gates. That’s fine. Just make the compromise to wait until everyone has the right to vote so there’s no more legal messes. If you are a legal adult, you should be allowed to marry whoever (gays/lesbians included here!) and however many you want, especially if the desire to have multiple people in the marriage is based on a religious belief. I don’t think the government has any business in religion, and vice-versa for that matter. It’s simple history, what happened last time there was some heavy religious persecution? We ended up with a new country. Well, I do believe we’ve ran out of available continents, so we’re going to have to deal with each other here, sorry. Is religious tolerance really that hard? Tolerance in general?

That being said, I know polygamy isn’t for me. I would probably become slightly homicidal if someone tried to get with Justin. That’s me though. sharing isn’t really my thing, but I wouldn’t knock it if someone else thought it was right for them.

Anyway, if you get the premium television from HBO, check out the show, you’ll definitely see where I’m coming from.
